Hedonistic Christmas

This year
No gift giving

Yes, in the Davis household this year it is hedonistic Christmas. We are all to spend on ourselves, wrap the gifts, and then open them in front of the family on Christmas day (SO all of my presents will read For/From Hope). The beauty you do not get things you don’t want and it is cheaper. The downside…stop your judgment…as if we were celebrating the true meaning of Christmas anyway.

Sounds great, 'taking back christmas' - right in the spirit of the buy nothing day movement... It is true, modern society consumes way too much. But, to call it hedonistic.. Sorry, I cannot agree. The tradition of giving presents for christmas is not - as the church claims - in memory of saint Nicoulas, but an important part of the Roman mid-winter fiest in Saturn's (god of light) honour. It was a way of showing friendship, generals gave their men a 'gratia' to show that he was pleased with their work the previous year, you can even find it described in old, pre-christianity viking songs. So, you may still buy or make your friends a 'little something' without following the Christian tradition. They're quite uncreative anyhow, so as long as ye stear away from cruzifixes, stars and angels you're more than safe.... ;)
Merry yule to ye all!
